The Beacon Foundation, a not for profit organisation, works with over 120 schools across Australia to provide effective and innovative approaches to youth unemployment through practical programs introduced into schools, usually at year 10 level.
Programs such as work placements, site tours of industry and businesses, speed careering, mentoring, mock interviews utilising the expertise of business partners, and a unique program called Polish that teaches good old fashioned manners and appropriate work ready behaviours all require input and support from key local businesses and industry. These all focus on the school to work transition, encouraging and motivating students to stay on track.
The Beacon program is based around providing young students with the knowledge and expertise to make informed decisions about their future and relies heavily on community support.
